Elite Stadshotellet offers eight modern venues for up to 250 people, for conferences and all kinds of events. On the ground floor facing the river you’ll find the gastropub The Bishops Arms which is a popular meeting place for locals, hotel guests and visitors to the city. You’ll also find a gym at the hotel, equipped with training machines, free weights and a sauna.
In 2021 the hotel expanded with 45 hotel rooms and a spa, Vana Spa, with hammam and the rooftop terrace Rooftop by Vana with a bar and a heated pool. In the open air, visitors can enjoy a fantastic view over Klarälven, good food and drinks from the bar.

However, it can mean, especially on weekends, that sounds from nightclubs reach our hotel, which can seem disturbing.

History of the hotel
In 1870, when the hotel was first opened, there was access to materials, skills, and expertise that we can only dream about today. Marble, hardwood, and chandeliers as well as stuccos and ornaments created a special atmosphere and contributed to the way that Stadshotellet in Karlstad still looks like today. It is all about true quality and craftsmanship!
Back in the days, the hotel was one of the largest and most beautiful hotels in Sweden. In 1904 electricity was installed and a few years later each room was fitted with heating pipes and each floor with a toilet. That was regarded as pure luxury – finally the commodes could be removed once and for all.
In 1905 when the agreement to dissolve the union between Sweden and Norway was signed in Karlstad, the entire Norwegian delegation stayed at Stadshotellet.
Many guests have returned year after year to Stadshotellet in Karlstad. One of them, the famous poet Gustaf Fröding, always sat at the same table in the dining room enjoying a glas of arrack punch while he gathered ideas to his poems.
Over the years, the hotel has undergone continuous renovation and updates. We have been careful to let quality rule every step of the way, as we would like to keep the hotel’s charming character for another hundred years. All areas in the hotel have been carefully designed to keep its character and yet remain functional.

By train
The hotel is located 500 metres from Karlstad Central Station. Walk Järnvägsgatan straight up from the central station towards the river (Klarälven). The hotel is on the right side of the bridge.
By bus
The bus station is located at Drottninggatan. Go east along Drottninggatan to the city centre and turn left to Järnvägsgatan. The hotel is located just before the bridge, on the right side of Klarälven.
By car from E18
Drive towards Skåre and then to the city centre. The hotel is located at the corner of Kungsgatan and Museigatan, the entrance is from Kungsgatan.
From Karlstad Airport: drive towards the city centre, keep to the left and turn left to Klara, Tingvalla. After about 400 metres, turn right to Sandbäcksgatan and you will see the hotel on the left side after the bridge.
